Search engines rank items not only by their popularity, but also by the number of "high quality" links from other websites, for example, from universities, corporations, government or professional organizations, to the target site. The algorithms for ranking are kept secret to stultify their being "gamed" by search target sponsors.
The articles below are apparently very useful to a wide audience of practitioners and scholars. (At NewFoundations we use this information to help us with research and publishing planning. The highest rank is 1; but, I normally do not search beyond the top 100 items. -- EGR)
Searches will show slight variations in rank (within 100) on a daily basis especially if the total number of items selected by the search terms is great. (The selection totals, however, seem to vary sometimes greatly(?) from week to week. A green count number below the present black count indicates the previous months entry.)
Rank 1 is the top rank. ">100" indicates that the item was ranked below the top 100 results for the month.
To verify, enter the search terms in a search engine. Set advanced search to yield 50 to 100 results for fastest search. If you wish, set options on full restrictions to reduce numbers (and block pornography). First try newf (avoid putting a space after newf } to locate the entry position for each search engine. (Otherwise, you might try to use gov.eric, researchgate.net or scribd in the browser search.)
NOTE: After you have entered the search terms and your screen has calmed down, IF YOU HAVE MADE THIS SAME SEARCH ON PREVIOUS OCCASIONS, (you may have to) re-enter the search terms to UPDATE your search results!
Ignore ads or search engine (Google, AOL or Bing) comments for your count. DON'T confuse the tallied items found by your search engines with the paid-for advertising or comments (which often looks like a search item) placed above or among them. Usually these are marked as "ads," or "suggestions" isolated with separators (or placed in a different colored background). These search-engine "sponsored" items do not affect the placement order of the items produced by your search.
NOTE: When I call up a search engine, I first Sign Out if I have an account for that search engine sponsor, and then proceed (incognito) entering the search terms (this usually only need be done once a session) so that the AI (artificial intelligence) of the engine, if there is one, does not bias the search in favor of the searcher's interests. -- EGR.
